LOR Guide

A Letter of Recommendation (LOR) is a critical component of every graduate school application. Most programmes require 2 - 3 LORs from professors or direct supervisors who can speak to your academic and professional capabilities. This guide covers what makes an LOR effective and how to brief your recommenders.

Who Should Write Your LOR?

For MS and PhD applications, at least one LOR should come from a professor who supervised your research or knew your academic work closely. Additional LORs can come from internship supervisors, project managers, or other professionals who can speak specifically about your work. Avoid LORs from family members, friends, or people who cannot speak to specific work you did together.

What Makes a Strong LOR?

How to Brief Your Recommender

Provide your recommender with a briefing document that includes your CV, your SOP (or a summary of it), the specific programme you are applying to, the LOR submission deadline, and a list of 3 - 5 specific projects or achievements you worked on together that you would like them to reference. The more specific the brief, the more specific - and effective - the LOR.

LOR Word Limits

Most universities ask for LORs between 500 and 800 words. Some have no stated limit. A well - written LOR should be long enough to be specific and convincing, but concise enough to hold the committee's attention. Two strong paragraphs of specific examples are more effective than four generic paragraphs of praise.
