What the Committee Actually Looks For
Cambridge's MPhil ACS is intensely research - oriented and admission is heavily influenced by whether a faculty member is willing to supervise you. The research statement is your most important document - it should read as a precise pitch to a specific supervisor, not a general letter of intent. Identify your target supervisor before applying, read their last three papers, and explain concretely why your background makes you a productive collaborator in their current research direction.
Key Themes Your SOP Must Cover
Specific research question you want to pursue at Cambridge
Why this question requires Cambridge's specific labs or faculty
Your most significant research contribution to date - depth over breadth
How the MPhil prepares you for PhD or industry research leadership
Common Mistakes That Get Indian Applicants Rejected
Treating the 500 - word limit as a summary of your CV - it should be a focused research pitch
Applying without identifying a specific supervisor or research group
Over - explaining coursework instead of demonstrating independent thinking
Mentioning Cambridge's brand or history as motivation
SOP Angles That Work for This Program
Supervisor alignment: identify a Cambridge supervisor, read their recent papers, and explain exactly how your work connects
Research continuation: your final - year project opened a question that only Cambridge's specific lab can help you answer
Methods transfer: a methodology from your field (statistics, biology, physics) applied to a CS problem Cambridge is actively working on
Specific Note for Indian Applicants
Cambridge receives strong applications from IIT and NIT graduates every year. The key differentiator is supervisor fit - applicants who have identified a specific Cambridge supervisor and made contact before submitting their application consistently report higher success rates. Indian students with research publications or strong internship research outcomes at top labs (Microsoft Research India, Google Brain, IISc) are best positioned.
