What the Committee Actually Looks For
WashU is a highly selective research university with a medical school that ranks consistently in the global top 10. This creates an extraordinary opportunity for CS students interested in computational biology, genomics, and health data - the school's CS - Medicine bridge is one of the strongest in the US. St. Louis has a lower cost of living than coastal cities and a growing tech scene, but the real draw is the research opportunity at the intersection of CS and world-class medical science.
Key Themes Your SOP Must Cover

Specific Note for Indian Applicants
WashU is an underrated option for Indian CS applicants who are interested in health data, computational biology, or bioinformatics. Its medical school connections rival those of Johns Hopkins and Harvard at a somewhat more accessible admission threshold. Indian students from biology + CS dual backgrounds or from biomedical engineering programmes will find WashU's interdisciplinary environment particularly well - suited. The lower cost of living in St. Louis is a practical advantage over coastal programmes.
